Today many former synagogues of New York City are now churches.
Some were abandoned and others deteriorated due to vandalism, neglect
and time. I paint these pictures as a part of my own search for
Jewish roots. A sense of history speaks to me from these forgotten
temples. Yet synagogues today still prove to be vital force in their
community. Smaller congregations, and lack of restoration funds
have made preservation challenging. Yet the ones that do survive
through difficult times, demonstrate the survival and determination
of a people. |
